Using Apple Software Restore to Back-up a Mac

What you'll need:

1. Apple Disk Copy version 6.3.3 (or greater)
2. Apple Software Restore from your latest CD (ASR)
3. Disk image preparation Scripts folder next to Disk Copy
(See the FTP location below to get these Scripts)

4. Some way to boot your Mac other than the FCP volume
(A boot CD will work, but it won't have the FTP files)

You will need those additional AppleScript additions to prepare disk
copy images for Apple Software Restore. You can get these additions
by downloading the Installer SDK from Apple's Developer site at:

<ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Installer_SDK/Installer_SDK_1.2.3.sea.bin>

The Installer SDK is a rather large download (33MB after it's
decompressed). After you've downloaded the SDK, find the folder
called "ASR 1.3.2" in the folder "Upgrader 1.2.3 & Engines". Pull
this folder out, and you can throw away the rest. This folder
contains version 1.3.2 of the Apple Software Restore application. You
will want to replace this with a newer version. You will also want to
replace the Disk Copy application in this folder with a newer version
(6.3.3 or better).

1. Boot from another drive volume or CD-Rom or however you can.

2. Launch the Disk Copy application. Make an image of FCP volume.

3. Use the "Scan Image for ASR..." option from the Scripts menu.

4. Put image in new "Configurations" Folder next to Apple Software Restore.

5. When needed run Apple Software Restore and reinstall the image to disk.

* For more info read the documentation that comes with the FTP download.
