FCP to ProTools (the simple way)
by Anthony Scarpa
This is assuming you are running protools on another mac. If it's on the same machine as FCP than ignore the transfer instructions.
1 Turn off all audio tracks in your final
sequence except 2.
2 Clear all in and out points in your sequence, as you will be
exporting the entire sequences even if this particular track only
has 2 seconds of dialogue at the 20 min. point etc.
3 Go to export and export the sequence as an Stereo AIF file (sound
only or in QuickTime without the video tracks)
4 Make sure you export in the same sample rate as your sequence
(i.e. 48k 16bit)
5 Save the exported file with a name like tracks 1-2.aif
6 Open the new file with your QuickTime player. It should be the
exact length of your sequence. If it isn't you screwed up and
will need to do it again.
7 Repeat these steps until you have as many # of aif files as
you have stereo pairs of FCP audio files.
8 Open toast and choose mac files and folders (not audio as this
will default to 44.1 and tell you it can't burn the 48k files)
Open the files and folders window and bring the files in. Burn
your CD. Also you may find it easier to transfer the files using
a Ethernet CROSSOVER cable and file sharing or dragging the files
to a removable drive like a firewire drive then dragging them
from the drive to the protools computer.
9 Import these files into protools.
10 Push each file up against the head of the protools timeline
and all tracks (which are the exact same length) will be in perfect
sync.
11 DO YOUR SOUND MIX
12 Take the final mix as a stereo file (or 2 mono files or whatever
you want) and reverse the process putting the files back on your
FCP computer.
13 Push the new MIX file up against the head of your timeline
(I Guarantee if you performed these steps correctly the sound
will be in sync with the picture)
14 Turn on the old audio tracks and see if you hear any difference
in time with the new track(You shouldn't)
15 Turn off the old tracks, turn on your new mix and enjoy.
16 Remember you owe me a beer.
