March.
26 , 2008
We welcomed Aperture
2.0 and the world debut of XMiL Sequencer to
lafcpug.
Aperture 2.0
just shipped and features over 100 new features for the still
photographer. What you might not know is that Aperture should
be in every Final Cut Pro editor's toolbox. David
Schloss will show you why.
XMiL Sequencer.
converts an XML file exported from a Final Cut Pro timeline and
turns it into an Avid Log Exchange (ALE) file. This file can
then be imported into an Avid nonlinear editing system, turning
the segments used in the FCP timeline into Avid master clips.
Editor and author Rainier Standke will demo. This will
be the world premiere of Xmil Sequencer.
Plus, Converting
HDV to ProRes 422 - and why you want to with Larry Jordan, Stump The Gurus, Show and Tells and of course, World Famous Raffle.
Agenda
6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join FCP Gurus Ann
Mendenhall. Larry
Jordan and Philip
Hodgetts as they will attempt to answer all of your
questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCP. If they
can't solve your problem or answer your How 2, then you go home
with a problem but you still got out of the house, so that's
not a bad thing.
7:20PM - 7:35PM - XMiL Sequencer -

7:40PM - 8:05PM - Storage Solutions
- Jason Deubler
In place of Promise, Jason Deubler
from GMAX will give us
all a primer on understanding Storage solutions and Xsan. From,
when is Firewire OK to what is a Raid and what do all those Raid
numbers mean.
Important Note:
Promise Technology had to cancel at last minute so will not be
able to appear.
8:05PM - 8:35PM - Aperture 2.0 - David
Schloss
Aperture

Users Professional Network will show you why.
8:35PM - 9:00PM -
Break
Brad Wright of
VeeScope
Live will be
in lobby complete with Green Screen.
GMAX will be there showing
off their storage solutions. Lots of other stuff will be showing
off too. The break
is a chance to hang out and meet and greet and get your problems
solved. Lots of FCP Gurus come to lafcpug meetings and this is
your chance to network and make contacts and get your problems
solved. Snacks and Beer and Wine
will be on sale in the lobby. Proceeds go to the Gallery Theater.
9:00PM - 9:20PM - Converting HDV to
ProRes 422 - and why you want to. - Larry Jordan
Nothing has caused more confusion for editors than HDV. Should
you edit HDV natively or convert it? If you convert it, should
you use ProRes 422? Join Larry Jordan in another of his trademark
"Make the impenetrable seem really, really obvious"
sessions as he shows you how to get HDV under control.
9:25 - 9:40PM - "Route 30" - John Putch - Show and
Tell
LAFCPUG member John Putch who when not directing TV shows
like Scrubs and Ugly Betty makes independent films out of his
garage with his professional friends. HIs last DIgitial rules
film was MOJAVE
PHONE BOOTH which played over 50 festivals and won 15 awards
and will soon be out on DVD. That project was shot on the Sony
Z1 and film-looked using DVfilm's Maker software. Quite an arduous
process to get that 24P look.
Tonight we get a sneak peak of the trailer
of John's latest indie ROUTE
30. Shot entirely in his home state of PA using the HVX200
P2, cut in FCP 6.02, titles in motion and livetype. The final
workflow will include a professional sound mix in protools and
a color correction on a Da Vinci 2K. The switch to P2 over HDV
was a happy one for John. Ask him why.
9:40PM - 9:50PM - "American Cancer
Society" - Brian Denny- Show and Tell
From Brian:
Recently I completed a promotional video on behalf of The American
Cancer Society.
The video is being used to raise awareness
of an event called Relay For Life that takes place in cities
all over the U.S. Not only does it promote the spirit of the
event and get people excited to participate, but provides a tool
for people who are already participating to explain and show
the event to potential sponsors.
The Relay event is a 24 hour activity.
I donated all of my time to do the production and editing. I
was a one-man camera crew using a Sony HVR-V1U. I recorded to
a Firestore type device and onto tape also.
After media managing all of the HDV files
down to Anamorphic DV footage files, all of the editing and DVD
authoring was done on my
PowerBook G4 using FCP4.5.
Well long story short, they liked it
and I felt good about the donation, and that it may help in some
way. I couldn't donate money, but I could give my time.
