Out of Memory?

I can't render - FCP's message is that I'm out of memory. My system preferences are all set to an external drive with 90 GB available.
I shut down to clear any buffer that might be full, but nothing. I'm stumped.
FCP ver 4.0
Power Mac G5
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2.5 GB


Ideas?

Got a forward slash / in any of your clip names?

How much space left on your system drive? All other drives?

are you using any psd's? if so, make sure you go back to photoshop and delete any empty layers, and, rasterize any text layers.

I should have remembered to rasterize the Photoshop text. It all seems so obvious when you see the answer.
