Browser help for FCP greenhorn

This is probably pretty basic, but here goes anyway...

In Premiere when you have clips listed in a bin, with icon view, there's a little indicator that tells whether the clip has been used in the timeline yet.

It's pretty useful for keeping track of which clips you've used already.

Surely FCP has a similar feature (?). I've looked high and low and can't find anything.

Also, when you're in a bin and have selected a clip that's been used in the timeline, is there a "locate clip in the timeline" feature?

Thanks...

Paul

no, and no.

there are workarounds:

"indicator that tells whether the clip has been used in the timeline yet."

if you select your timeline clips, and COLOUR them,
(option apple 2-6 colour the clips, option apple 1 is no-colour)
the browser clip will be coloured too.

"is there a "locate clip in the timeline" feature?"

if you open the clip into the viewer, and park within the in-out points,
then match frame (f) will take you to that particular frame in the timeline.

you can see the issue here, no doubt: you need to be parked on a frame that has actually been used in the cut, otherwise if wont work.

cheers,
nick

Mystery solved. Thanks.

I can't believe FCP doesn't have what would seem to be these fairly basic features.

Premiere works quite differently. There is a direct relationship between the item in the project window and the item in the timeline. Because you can have multiple sequences and multiple projects all open simultaneously, there's no way for the application to tell you which timeline or project a clip is used in. You can also severe the master/affiliate relationship by making a sequence clip independent. You can however use dupe detection to show if a clip has been used more than once in a sequence.

All the best,

Tom

That makes perfect sense.

Thanks,
