patches of lights and shadows on face

Hi there,
I am working a an interview where the subject is sitting under a palmtree and I have areas of light and patches of darkness on the subject's face. Apart from color correcting to even out the contrast between the dark and light, is there any advice on how to better the image? I'm working on FCP 4.5/AE 6.5. Let me know if you've come across the same problem. TIA.

Read up lots on ccing. Don't be shy of playing with gamma, and take it easy. Less is usually more in ccing.
