24p or 24pA?

I'm shooting on 100A's and I'm wondering if there is a quality difference with the advanced mode? I will be outputing to miniDV tape.

As I understand it in 24pA I'll need to capture at 24p and edit at 24p. While with 24p regular I dont have to do anything different.

IF I understand your question...the answer is - If you are shooting in 24p you have 2 options to edit:

1. to use FCP in in its basic 29.97 mode - you do not use the advanced mode.
(but then why shoot in 24p? I am sure there are reasons)

2. to use FCP in 24p as you want to edit and then go out to film at 24 frames - then yes you must use the Advanced mode.


You have no need to remove a pulldown ( which the "A" does in effect) if you are not ever going to need to transition from 24 FPS output.

So there is no quality advantage to using 24pA?

As I understand it, 24pA is just to allow FCP to automatically convert back to 24p w/o needing to run through an outside program to take out the extra frames? Is this correct?

Regarding the project, it will be deliverd on miniDV, and odds are never transfered to film.

The reason for shooting 24p is to get the feel/look of film.

There is no quality gained/lost when shooting 24pA vs shooting 24p.

If your output will be to tape, shoot 24p...NOT 24pa. That option is ONLY if you are eventually going to a film print, or DVD ONLY. If you EVER plan on going to tape, 24p is your setting.

do DVDs look better when shot in 24pa as opposed to 24p ? I know compressor has an option for using 23.97 frames.

Would I be better off for video shooting 24pa rather than 24p then going out to mpeg2. What quality differences are there?

This isn't a quality issue. There is no difference in quality between 24p and 24pa. It is a difference in workflow.

IF and only IF your FINAL product will be a film print or DVD, should you even CONSIDER 24pA. If you are going to tape at any point, shoot and edit 24p. 24p edits on a regular 29.97 timeline.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE in quality between 24p and 24pA...period. None. Nada. Zippo. It is a matter or workflow and that's it.

It's a matter of pulldown sequencing. 24p = 2:3:2:3:2:3, 24pa = 2:2:3:3:2:2:3:3. No quality difference, but it's a little easier to see the pulldown artifacting with 24pa.
