is there a way to export a movie as a bunch of frames so i can edit them each as stills in photoshop or illistrator

Yes. Export as an Image Sequence. FILE>EXPORT>QT CONVERSION. Click on the drop dwon menu and select Image Sequence.

But stay in the Land of Mac. Very very nasty things happen if you're a mixed shop with Linux, UNIX, and PCs. FCP distorts the gamma (gray values) on still export and undistorts them on import. As long as you stay with the Mac tools, you'll never notice the difference.

Oh. One other oddity. All the still exports I ever did have places for three characters in the number field. That gives you 999 frames with the current naming scheme. That's a little over 30 seconds of animation.

It keeps going above that, but the names & numbers get scrambled. This could count if you flip the frames between machines.

pix994.jpg comes *after* pix2999.jpg.
