Dreaded "unable to connect with background process"

Posted by Handcranked Films
I've recently upgraded to Apple's Tiger and now I am getting that damned "unable to connect to background process" message. I've tried downloading the newest version of compressor with no luck.

Any suggestions s to where I can go?

Compressor 1.2.1 or 2?

You tried this?

Hello Michael

Yes I've tried dowloading 1.2.1. I was unaware of a Version 2. Is this a free download or update? Stupid question, probably.

I haven't tried reinstalling FCP4. Wht kind of risks are involved. I'd hate to loose my the project I've been working on.

Need to buy FCP 5 for Compressor 2. Why cant you download 1.2.1 or have you and it didnt solve problem?

Michael Horton
-------------------
No, I've tried downloading and installing 1.2.1 with no luck. Actually, 1.2.1 is what I was using before upgrading to Tiger. It's been very frustrating. I'd almost be willing to go back to OS 3 if that would fix the problem.

I dont understand. If you got 1.2.1 then why you downloading it? Have you tried the other cures on that page I gave you?

Michael Horton

I've tried dowloading again and re-installing because I was hoping a fresh download and install might do the trick. Yes, I've tried trashing preferences and repairing permissions. No luck.

So you did this and it didnt work?

Click the Finder in the Dock.
From the Go menu, choose Go To Folder.
Enter "/Library/Receipts" and click Go.
If present, drag files which contain the name "CompressorUpdate" to the Trash.
From the Go menu, choose Go To Folder.
Enter "/Library/Frameworks" and click Go.
Drag the file "Compressor.framework" to the Trash.
Go to either the Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro page and download the Compressor 1.2.1 update (you will need to have your serial number).
Install the Compressor 1.2.1 update.

If so then reinstall FCP and DVDSP. Its not that big of deal and it won't affect your current project(s)

You using 4.5, right?

Michael Horton
-------------------
Yes, I've tried your method and it didn't work for me. I am working with 4.5.

Reinstall. Just follow directions on how to uninstall, also on that page

Michael Horton

I'll try the install. Are there specific instructions I can get somewhere. I surely don't want to mess something up.

Thanks for all of your help.

How to uninstall FCP

[docs.info.apple.com]

How to uninstall DVDSP

[docs.info.apple.com]

Then just install FCP 4 from the CD and upgrade to 4.5

Repair permissions before and after every install.

try this

Launch Terminal (Application>Utilities>Terminal) and type this:

sudo /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster/Qmaster

Then hit return, then enter your administrative password. Then you should get a message about Qmaster services starting up.

Re-launch Compressor,

worked for me in Compressor 2 and many people have said it worked for them in C1

Hi,
I tried Michaels fix and it doesn work if you uninstall and reinstall FCP4 1st do the upgrades to 4.1 & 4.5 HD then uninstall DVDSP and reinstall. Install Compressor 1.2.1 last. It does work! I had the problem for weeks and this method solved it for me. Every Pro App I have runs seamless with Tiger 10.4.1 now. It's all in the un-install and re-install

Thanks Michael
David - thanks - your method worked for me to be able to get COMPRESSOR to launch correctly.

But I am finding I need to do this every time I need to use Compressor. Do you know if there is a more permant fix?

thanks
