preview disabled

hi all,

when opening log and capture the message i get is preview disabled over the color bars...

it reads VTR okay, but when i try to control my deck it just goes into a color wheel...

it plays through to my monitor, but nothing appears in the log and capture window...just 'preview disabled.'
but even though it plays through to monitor, i CANNOT digitize because when i hit capture now i get the color wheel again...

i've done some research, this seems to be a random bug with no known cause
solutions i've tried are the obvious:
1 - trash preferences numerous times
2 - uninstall and reinstall quicktime 7

short of re-installing FCP 5 does anyone know of a troubleshoot for this?

The problem is related to using FireWire devices, like portable drives daisy chained to your deck. You're overloading your FireWire bus and /or causing a corruption with your prefs.

Better to use internal HDs with FCP. If you must use FireWire drives, please try using a PCI card with FireWire ports to create a new bus.
