Which is the better compression to use for DVD creation for my HD short if I want to burn it to DVD?

Doesn't matter. But if you are going from FCP, the only option you have is .mov.

FCP can export AVI.
You want to export using "current settings" from FCP and the use MPEG2 for video and AAC for audio in Compressor 2. Otherwise you can drop the FCP export into iMovie which will do the MPEG2 Compression and PCM audio.

I think what appears in iMovie export is dependent on your system. In 10.4 with QT7 MPEG-2 export does not normally appear.
All the best,
Tom

Avoid AVI in general. It's an old standard that would likely have died off long ago if it weren't for it's use by DIVX.
