Hard Drive Window Disappears

I am going crazy ! My dual PM G4 @ 867MHz is freaking !
When I double click on the hard drive icon to view the contents it opens and then closes by itself in 2 seconds. If other windows are opened at the time it closes them down too.

What the heck is going on ????

I guess I'd suspect corrupt Finder preferences as a place to begin. Look for {user}>Library>Preferences>com.apple.finder.plist and trash it.

What version of OS? How did this come about?

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it right away.
The OS is 10.3.9.

I have no clue what brought this on. And it is not consistent.

In about 1 out of 10 attempts - it will go away after 2 seconds as it is trying to populate the screen with the text - and then come back - hangup a moment or two and then populate.

I can sometimes look at the contents of the HD when I open it through FINDER. But often when I ask for the "list" view by clicking on the middle of the three clustered view buttons - it will refuse and close the window down. It's CRAZY!
