EDL export timecode is bogus does not match clips
January 22, 2006 01:05PM
I deleted all of my media and recaptured with better settings. My original capture was using "Capture Now" 10 minute long clips which I later made in to subclips. I edited approximately 15 sequences. Now I am trying to rebuild the sequences with the new clips that were logged and captured one take at a time (ie. 24-1, 24-2, 24-3, etc.). I just want the timecode to quickly match the appropriate clips but the edl is producing timecode that is arbitrary. for example the clip in the sequence could only start at the 7th hour but the edl timecode starts at the 9th hour and then every minute, second, and frame is so abitrary I can not make any rhyme or reason out of it. It is awfully time consuming to put each OFFLINE clip into the viewer to obtain its start frame and end frame. Is there any way around this bug. The first couple of EDLs were fine. but since yesterday all of the EDL I export and open are completely wrong!

Here is a sample of an ambiguos clip in my edl vs. the actual clip in/out points
09:19:11:13 09:19:25:02 01:00:00:00 01:00:13:13 EDL
07:27:22:13 07:27:36:00 01:00:00:00 01:00:13:13 ACTUAL

Any ideas, suggestions?

If you're capturing via FireWire, I've been told that you can't do Advanced Pulldown Removal on the fly with FireWire. You should have batch-reverse-telecined with Cinema Tools.

If you're talking about an EDL exported from your previous timeline, if you had timecode breaks on your tapes but had used Capture Now and chosen to ignore and capture across timecode breaks (Warn after Capture in User Preferences), then your timecode from that session could have been wrong to begin with. Step 1 is to check your original media's timecodes against the tapes. If those two don't match, you've got a whole set of problems to begin with.

Derek,

The original footage was captured "on the fly" with "CAPTURE NOW" but all of the clips reference accurate timecode from the tapes. Initially I was able to get three EDLs that were usable. then the next 5 or so were completely erroneous. After much frustration and as you can imagine a lot or rework I finally decided to shut my computer off for several hours. When I later launched FCP the next edl I exported was accurate. I was thrilled because it was one of the longest sequences so far with approx 100 edits.

By the way none of my sequences have effects as they are just roughs right now.

After this experience I would never recommend CAPTURE NOW, capturing across timecode breaks, or subclipping. It is a nightmare when you have to recapture.

For the next 12 sequences I will try the latest technique of shutting the system completely down. Hopefully it does the trick.

thanks for your reply.

You have 2 issues here:

1] Capture Now probably ignored time code breaks so that all events after a break are not accurate. Recapture the correct way - by logging.

2] After reverse telecine, FCP changes your timecode from 30 FPS to 24 FPS. Use Cinema Tools to convert a 24 FPS EDL to a 30 FPS EDL.

Mitch,

issue 1 sounds right
>1] Capture Now probably ignored time code breaks so that all events after a break are not accurate.

I became aware of the problem now that I have recaptured the footage by logging i/o points first. I will no longer use CAPTURE NOW.

As for reverse telecine, I have not covered that in the manual yet. This is my first FCP project. It is ok to create my sequences at 23.98 and later do reverse telecine when I am ready to export the final movie?

I've actually had this problem with a project not captured as Capture Now, working in a 23.98 sequence in FCP 5. I found no solution. I think it's a bug.
