Playback problem

Every so often, the strangest thing happens ... I'm editing a movie (but I'm not an old hand at editing) and for no reason that I can figure out, some of my clips suddenly speed up like Charlie Chaplin on steroids, along with showing parts of the clip not edited into my timeline. The only way I know to fix it is to re-edit the clips, which is a drag. Any suggestions?

Trash your preference. Use FCP Rescue.

Some alternative "quickie" fixes:

1. Force the clip to re-render itself by adding an effect to it, then removing the effect.
2. Match-frame the clip and recut it into the timeline.
3. Disconnect the clip using SHIFT-D, but don't delete the media (don't move files to Trash, and don't delete files from disk). Now reconnect the clip right away.

I think Shane's right, those tend to be symptoms of corrupt preferences (or corrupt media), but if you're in a session and don't want to deal with preferences, sometimes the quick fixes can let you keep going and find the ultimate solution later.
