Using Excel to log footage.

Using Excel to log footage.

Hello all;

My Creative Director recently returned from a FCP training course (where he got certified as a Level 1 FCP trainer, the lucky so-and-so), and heard the instructor mention in passing that Microsoft Excel can be used to log footage, and then be imported into FCP for capturing. He's done a web search for more information on this, but has turned up nothing. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how to go about it? Thanks!

Basically, it means that you save the Excel spreadsheet in tab-delimited format, then import that file into FCP with File > Import > Batch List. It's important that you have a certain minimum number of columns to supply to FCP, and it can be picky. I would suggest doing the reverse as a way to get familiar - Put together a short batch list in FCP using the Log & Capture window (Export > Batch List) then look at that file to see what's in it.

Thanks Scott! This seems to be working perfectly so far . . .
