chapter markers in QT - or - something better than DVD fpr presentation

i;m putting together some visuals for a play that will need to be cued live
we'd like more resolution than SD,
so il;m looking for something better than DVD

"presenting" DVCProHD QT movies is what i;m thinking of.

is there a way to add chapter markers to a QT file,
or create a QT file with chapter markers
so that i can easily jump to my next chapter/cue?

i got excited about iTunes for about 3 seconds, but it's really jerky on the change-overs from file to file.

I've been recommended Isadora as a piece of theatre-based software,
but it;s overkill for what i need.

thanks,
nick

in a fcp seq you double click "m" where you want the chapter marker. Name the chapter and click "add chapter marker". Do this across your seq, when you export the QT, there will be a pull down menu with all of your named chapters.

thanks, mark,

but what i want to do is to have "chapter" markers, or index points that i can jump to in QT itself,
while the QT file is playing out to a projector.

or some small app that lets me play QT files in that way.

thanks,
nick

I think what he was trying to say is that Chapter Markers made in FCP are accessible in QuickTime Player on the lower right menu. But I'm sure you already knew that. Are you trying to do it a different way, and if so, why?

gotcha. you need to cut live for the play. perhaps there is a way to throw up a transitional element between moments in the QT, maybe just black but i guess you would need a second projector.

not sure as i have never done anything like that. I just got a crash course in dvdsp and NEEDED to know how to do the qt chapter markers for the project.

cool
i didnt know about those QT "Chapters".
that's good to know.
but i cant seem to jump to them like i can jump to DVD chapters.
well i can, but it involves manually selecting the next chapter / cue point.

what i really need is a one button approach.
well a few buttons:
play, pause, jump to next chapter.

i need that for 2 reasons:
1- the KISS factor: keep it simple stupid smiling smiley is would be too easy to choose the wrong cue selecting from a list

2- we'll have TWO projections going, and i want to simultaneously control 2 players,
hopefully via a simple remote.

can i do that (jump to next chapter) in QT?
that would be cool.
otherwise some simple app?

(i realise this is a bit off topic - but hey, i'm CUTTING the pieces in FCP smiling smiley - i've added an OT to the subject line)

thanks,
nick

I just tried every button combination I could find on a movie file that I know has chapter markers (visible and accessible via the mouse click on the lower right), but I don't think there is a chapter-jump function in QT Player. Then again, the latest version of QuickTime 7 has a bunch of new options, so maybe it's worth exploring.

Hey nick,

This is a toughie...a mate of mine just did something like this. I prepared the FCP/QT files for him, then he imported them into a PC app (I will find out which one and get back to you) and he had it set up exactly as you wanted.

All was well until his laptop HD died on opening night, but that's one of those things.

I will ask and reply back!

we'll be using macs, i think,
but these days Mac & PC are overlapping a bit more.

i;d love to find out what it was.

"his laptop HD died on opening night"

hmm.. no wonder they want to use DVDs!

thanks,
nick

Actually the chances of the DVD or DVD player dying are much more than an HD. For goodness sake, make multiple copies once you figure this out.

ah, but it's so much easier to source another DVD player...

but yes, you're right, of course.
& thanks for the reminder: backups and safety copies are a must.

interesting play,
it;s a monolgue written and performed by Nicholas Hope,
who was the lead in a big cult film here called "Bad Boy Bubby" (Justin will know it, for sure smiling smiley)
also had a walk on role in Scooby Doo and been living off it since!

he lived in Norway for a long time, and we've got lots of beautiful Norwegian footage to play with.

cheers,
nick

Hey nick,

guess what - my mate used Isadora....maybe give it a crack?

He's still using the demo version, takes him 2 minutes to set up, only limitation is you can't save. US $350 could be well out of your budget....

Play sounds good - coming to Melbourne?

As for Bad Boy Bubby, I remember it floating around, but can't remember if I ever got around to seeing it....

[imdb.com]

Good luck - let you know if I have any more ideas....

Justin.

i'll have another look at isadora.
if you'd seen Bad Boy Bubby you'd remember it!
play goes from Sydney to... Norway!
but not Melbs sad smiley

thanks, justin,
nick
