1920x1080 says 1440x1080?

Could someone explain to me and my partner why my clip properties say that my Canon H1 footage is 1440 x 1080, and when I open in Quicktime player it says 1920 x 1080? I received already captured files that are 16 x 9 HD, 29.97, and the Apple Intermediate codec......

It looks great, and I want to export my 30 sec edits at highest quality, that will eventually compressed for internet at a size 20-40MB's.

I'm thinking I export a 10 bit, compression- none.....Do I set the frame size to 1920 x1080, or 1440 x 1080? Does that help, or should I stick with the same file settings and codec used on capture?
thanks for helping a new final cut hd 5.04 user....

Because the true size of HDV is actually 1440x1080. QuickTime Player is just scaling that up to 1920x1080 so it is displayed at the proper 16:9 aspect ratio on screen.

Forget None or Uncompressed codecs - overkill for an eventual export for web and definitely don't do an export to 10 bit - you will gain nothing (except file size) as HDV is an 8 bit format.

Regarding other export options, it really depends where the files are going next - if you're doing the compression for web on the same system then leave it as Apple Intermediate Codec. Alternatively you could export to Photo JPEG (set Quality slider to 75% or more) which will give you more than enough quality for an eventual web export and can be read on any system with QuickTime without special codecs required.

I'd stick with 1440x1080 export size, otherwise you'd be scaling up to 1920 and then down again for the web export. If you're not doing the web compression yourself be sure that the final export is done at 16:9 aspect rather than the 4:3 aspect of the 1440 original file.

There are some more bad news, I'm afraid smiling smiley Your footage is not even 1440x1080. That's the HDV format's nominal pixel grid. The actual pixel count from the CCDs is always quite below that figure - the camera's internal processing software upsamples it to 1440x1080. So you see, in just two posts you went from 1920x1080 to maybe half of that. The good news? The Canon XL-H1 raw pixel count seems to be the highest among HDV cameras, really! Also, both HDV lovers and haters will agree that the format's most obvious shortcoming is not its' resoultion, but the compression scheme smiling smiley

Sorry to piggyback on your discussion, but I am currently editing DVC Pro HD 720p60 material shot with the Panasonic HVX200. Quicktime tells me that my material is 1280x720, while FCP says it is 960x720. Is this the same situation where Quicktime scales the footage for proper 16x9 display, or is FCP compressing my material?

It is the same situation James - none of the common HD formats use the full square pixel resolution.
