I have noticed lately that with this new format of the posts floating to the top of the list, less new topics are created. People just go on and on and on in the older topics....morphing questions into a Buffy the Vampire Slayer discussion.

I am not knocking this, mind you, just making an interesting observation....and wondering what THIS topic will morph into.

I personally am rooting for the swaping of drunken Irish songs...

After this the thread will probably turn into a discussion on something dull and useful, like copyright law. In the meantime, here you go Shane. This one's a gooder.

THE IRISH ROVER

On the Fourth of July, 1806
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the Grand City Hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft
She was rigged fore and aft
And oh, how the wild wind drove her
She stood several blasts
She had twenty seven masts
And they called her The Irish Rover

We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stone
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides
We had four million barrels of bones
We had five million hogs
And six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
We had eight million bails of old nanny-goats' tails
In the hold of the Irish Rover

There was awl Mickey Coote
Who played hard on his flute
When the ladies lined up for a set
He was tootin' with skill
For each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his smart witty talk
He was cock of the walk
And he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance
When he took up his stance
That he sailed in The Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee
From the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGurk
Who was scared stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole
Who was drunk as a rule
And Fighting Bill Treacy from Dover
And your man, Mick MacCann
From the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years
When the measles broke out
And the ship lost its way in the fog
And that whale of a crew
Was reduced down to two
Just myself and the Captain's old dog
Then the ship struck a rock
Oh Lord! what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around
And the poor old dog was drowned
And the last of The Irish Rover

And another...

The Wild Rover

I've been a wild rover for many's the year
and I've spent all my money on whiskey and beer.
But now I'm returning with gold in great store
and I never will play the wild rover no more

Chorus:
And it's no, nay, never,
no, nay, never, no more
will I play the wild rover
no, never, no more

I went into an ale-house I used to frequent
and I told the landlady my money was spent.
I asked her for credit, she answered me nay,
"a custom like yours I can have any day

Chorus

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright
and the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.
She said I'd have whiskey and wines of the best
and the words that she told me were only in jest.

Chorus

I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done,
and I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
And when they've caressed me as oft' times before
then I never will play the wild rover no more

Chorus x2

FYI

The float to top feature is turned OFF by default now. Has been off for a few months. It is only when you turn it ON manually will you see the feature. I personally turned it off. Tried to get used to it, but ultimately it was the long threads that morphed into 20 different topics that did me in.

You know Bubble Up is a clicky now, right? You can turn it off. It drove me nuts.

...it's really ultimately up to the posters to keep threads on topic. If you let it go, it will go off in another direction inevitably. I personally LOVE the "Float" feature. Thanx for implementing & keeping it in there, Mike.

Thanks for the drinking songs. I'll print them out and endeavor to memorize them.

Hmmm...float to top turned off. I wonder why the threads are all HUGE now with the new system then?

Nick, the option is at the bottom of the forum's message list. The blue bars, between "Current Page" and "Goto" there is a bar for "Options - Turn floating threads off".

off...on...doesn't matter. I don't read messages via the forum anyway. Since I get EVERY entry via an e-mail, I read that way. This is how I noticed that there were so few new topics, just old ones that are constantly being commented on.
