weird problem after switching monitors... everything is off the screen!

what can I do about this?

dock doesnt' appear, I can't see the window for system preferences.

there were a couple of finder windows when it starts up whose right hand sides appeared, and I was able to drag them into the center of the screen,,, but computer seems to think this is a 2nd monitor, and I can't get at any of the applications to use them...

how can I move everything back over (to the right, as it happens,,,)???

Can you plau in the old monitor and use it to check the system settings?

Oh wait - this might work. Right click or control click on the desktop and select 'change desktop background'. At the top of the popup dialogie, select the button that says 'All'. This should bring up your sytem prefs.

well I am hoping for a solution from the desktop end rather than crawling around and unplugging and plugging so haven't done that yet

tried "change background" but only the "desktop picture" window appears, not the whole larger sys pref box. in fact the only way to get rid of it is to opt Q.

oops the problem is there are 2 monitor plugs in back and I'm used to, if I put it in the wrong one I get nothing, but this time I'm getting the extra real estate. That's definitely what's going on here.
