FCP Studio 5.0.4

Hello. I'm trying to import some video from Mini DV. the video starts out pretty quick on the tape so I set the pre-roll to 2 seconds then set the in point to 3 seconds but I still got the message about not enough timecode to start the batch capture.
Other then just doing a capture now is there anything else I can try?
I got the tape from someone so they didnt know to have some slack in the beginning to allow for the capture...

The cameraman killed you there. You can try Capture Now, or redubbing the tape to a new tape with pre-roll, but neither method is guaranteed to work.

The first 10 seconds of a tape aren't meant to be used. Any good camera operator should know to pre-roll.

Nothing you can do but Capture Now. Sounds like your "DP" needs lessons on how to shoot. All decent camera guys burn the first :30 of tape by laying down black or color bars.

recently i had a great shot that just had to be used (and was) that was right at the head of the tape.

i logged the tape with a 5 second start so i could batch capture it.
that meant losing the great moment.
so i did a capture now of the first 10 or so seconds,
and made a safety copy of that small file on another drive.
if i'd been a really good boy i would have backed it up onto DVD as well.
