29.97 movie looks terrible in DVD; looked great in 23.98 WHY?

I made a copy of my feature from the 29.97 master. It has logitudinal stripes running through it every time there is a pan! The color is mostly awful and the focus is soft in many places.

The first time I made a DVD from the 23.98 version, the colors looked great and the whole movie was sharp.

The only reason why I re-captured and re-edited my feature was because I couldn't do color corrections in the 23.98 version. I don't know why -- to this day.

If you're reading about my troubles with this movie for the first time ... the movie was shot in 35mm and telecined as DVCAM.

I brought it into my G5 dual 2.7 FCP 5.04 and captured it as 23.98 (I was told this was a mistake, and maybe it was).

But why is the 29.97, version which allowed me to do color correction, end up so bad in DVD?

I appreciate your comments.

possible reason:

there are more frames, requiring a stronger compression.
now you've got a 29.97 maser, maybe you can do the pulldown on that,
and make a DVD.

don't hold me to it,
i'm from PAL land.

Thanks, Nick. I left "pulldown" unchecked when I did the compression to MPEG2.

I'll give it another shot.
