Mirroring fcp from powerbook to 23 cinema display

Posted by pistol pete

I just purchased 23" apple monitor and have a G4 powerbook for fcp. I wanted to mirror fcp to the 23". Got the laptop and monitor to mirror but when I playback video from the timeline there is significant stuttering of the video and audio and I get an immediate "frames dropped during playback" error message. When I switch the laptop using the f7 key to switch from mirror to two seperate displays, then there is no stuttering of the video and audio when I play back in fcp and everything is okay. Why does my computer stutter in mirror mode but doesn't stutter when not in mirror mode? Is there any setting I can change or the resolution to fix the problem?

Hi.

Pete i would recommend the separate monitors configuration.
Besides giving you more working space, it will help FCP reduce its Playback load.
Drop Frames Warnings usually happens when the Viewer or the Canvas display the footage without the correct Zoom level. To solve this simply press SHIFT+Z (Fit in Window) in either the Viewer or the Canvas.

i dont understand why youd want to mirror in the first place? you now have two seperate monitors - why not use them as such?

Thanks guys. Yeah I can use as dual monitors, and drag timeline and browser so I dont have to strain to read browser on powerbook. Apple cat told me on the line that powerbook video card not powerfull enough to mirror both powerbook and 23 at same time. Anyway, I would like just to have the whole kitchen sink on the 23 but what do you hit for configuration to have windows etc automatically set up on both windows? AND NO KEVIN I SURE AINT A TEACHER... JUST A SPONGE..
FCP will remember how you last left things. so put things where you want them and all will be well - you can also save window layouts (look under the window pull down menu)
AND FYI, i hooked my dell 24" to my powerbook 17 (older 1ghz) and it wouldnt even see the monitor
yeah it works better when using dual split and saving it as custom. guess have to get tower to have it all automatically work on 23.
