gamma correction vs. contrast filter

I find tweeking color difficult in FCP, because it's easy to go overboard. Not having a TV set or broadcast monitor is also a problem as it's been pointed out here.

So what I do is do subtle color corrections, using the 3 way color correction filter and a combination of gamma correction and contrast/brightness filters.

These procedures require a lot of tweeking. I wonder if some of you have found a faster way to do simple color correction. I use "simple" here advisedly. I know there's nothing simple about color correction.

Still some helpful hints will be appreciated.
