New HDV workflow in FCS 2?

New HDV workflow in FCS 2?

With FCS 2 ability to set RENDERING to the ProRes codec while leaving raw HDV clips alone in an HDV Sequence, would this have any quality benefits over just transcoding everything to ProRes to begin with? Do the HDV clips that remain raw, retain any more sharpness by not being transcoded? Is this the best of both worlds now for HDV?

Then again, I do find that almost every clip gets color corrected these days.

I'll be waiting to see the answer to this question as we're doing an HDV show right now.
We used the HDV codec, after first using AIC which was crap.

FCP 6 should be a lot of fun.

Did you compare AIC to DVCPRO-HD?

Hi Christopher,

Yes I too am keen to try this as I have certainly had examples of HDV Footage that I have tried to colour correct only to find that it gets pretty ugly pretty quick.

in terms of transcoding losses, in this case since you are going from a lower quality to a higher quality codec so you would expect that the higher quality codec could capture all info from the lower quality codec and get no worse (but get no better either).

It's only when you start to manipulate clips that you would see a difference.

The point I guess about not transcoding everything is to save time - less time transcoding on the way in and transcoding on the way out again.
