Quicktime aspect ratio changesPosted by Phil G.
Editing a project using FCP 4.5 HD and Mac OS 10.3.9.
When I record the video from the timeline onto a Mini-DV deck the playback from the deck looks normal and is in the widescreen format as expected. However, when I record a Quicktime Movie, self contained, in order to author a DVD using this video, the QT Movie is in the 4:3 aspect ratio. All scenes are distorted to the 4:3 ratio. I'm sure there is a simple solution to this problem it's just that I cannot determine what it is. Would appreciate your assistance. Thanks very much.
Standard Def 16/9 is ANAMORPHIC.
meaning that it;s native size is 4/3 and it;s only on DISPLAY that it gets stretched out to 16/9. maybe it looks ok off tape because you've got your TV set to 16/9? anyway, there's nothing wrong with that QT file. use it in DVDSP, and just remember to set up your DVDSP project as anamorphic. nick
Thanks for your input Nick. However, I'm still having problems. This is what I did:
1. Edited footage shot with a Sony Z1 in HDV using FCP HD 4.5. 2. Exported to QT movie self contained. 3. Setup menu and button in anamorphic aspect using DVD Studio Pro. 4. Imported asset which is the QT movie 5. Indicated chapter markers, etc. 6. Performed encoding of QT & menu. 7. When played back the menu was 16:9 but the asset video was 4:3. Will attack it again tomorrow. I've researched both FCP and DVDSP manuals but cannot find what I have left out. It shouldn't be this difficult. Thanks again. Will post it if I can figure it out.
This article may help even though it talks about iDVD.
It worked for me. I shot with an XL2 16:9 24P. Exported a quicktime .mov when I looked at the .mov from the quicktime player is was 4:3 so this article showed what you have to do if this happens before you make a DVD to make the aspect ratio anamorphic. Hope this is appropriate for you... [docs.info.apple.com]
ok ok your video format is 16/9° and is respected exporting
but : (and in this case you'll have to use File/ Export/QuickTime conversion and not File/ Export/ QuickTime Sequence) did you change the format of the QuickTime file itself, say ... the container to custom 720/405 post back --------------------------------- A Day late & a Dollar-short Productions

I don't see anywhere in your list where you made the video asset itself, anamorphic. Just making the menu and the button anamorphic isn't enough. In DVDSP you highlight the video asset in the graphic layout and then edit it's properties in the inspector to 16x9. You'll see the graphic layout icoon of the video asset switch to a wider view. Then you need to set the options for how playback is handled in non-widescreen units, letterbox, squeeze, crop are your options I believe. ak Sleeplings, AWAKE!
