FCP 5 timeline settings & HVX 200

I have a G-5 Quad 2 gig RAM with FCP 5. I am trying to get the
slo-mo look on my clip that I shot with my very new HVX 200
camera - Recording format 720P/24P
Recording framerate set to 60 fps
Scene file - film cam

When I bring the 60 fps clip into an FCP timeline of 23.98 fps I must
render the clip of course but it barely seems slower - not like what I have
seen done by others online applying the overcrank method. I try to
apply a Modify - Speed change and it freezes - makes sense I think - I have only
a 400 firewire drive probably too much for it.

If I bring the clip into an FCP timeline of 59.94 fps it doesn't need to be
rendered of course and if I slow -mo it through Modify speed change
it also doesn't need rendering. It looks like I want it to look. But I want
to understand why the 23.98 fps doesn't work like I think it should.

Also with the P-2 card files ( .mxf ) from the HVX 200 camera, when you go to
trash them, many are locked. Is there a more efficient way than going to each and unlocking.

There are plug-ins for FCP that allow your over- or under-cranked to play at their true speed, so you do not need to apply a speed change. Also, I wouldn't edit 720p from a FW400 drive, it's bound to give you problems.

Do a search for that camera in this forum; there were some posts after the last meeting (where they spoke abou the camera) and somebody had listed a good article that covered the HVX and where to find the plug-ins.

If you shot 720p24 at 59.94, you need to use the easy setup DVCPRO HD 720p60. BUT...if you want to edit at 23.98, and want your 60P footage to be slowed down to 23.98 (as you indicated) then you need to get the "DVCPRO HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER." This will convert the 60P material to 23.98 and slow it down. Very smooth.

If you want the 60P footage to play in a 23.98 timeline, you drop it in and render. THis is why it is best to shoot 720p24 24PN (native) for all your normal stuff, then 60P for all the footage you want to slow down.
