Hi,

We have a show that is about fifty percent DVCPRO HD and fifty percent SD archival footage. The HD footage was shot on DVCPRO HD Vericam 1080 24. We down converted it to NTSC 29.97 and edited it in SD.

Now we would like to online the HD footage and up convert the SD footage (center cut with graphical wings on the sides).

What do you think would be the best work flow for this?

One option considered was to make an EDL and do it on a symphony.

However, I think it might be better to just stay in a final cut environment.

The problem seems to me to be the fact that DVCPRO HD 1080 24 is non drop frame, where as NTSC 29.97 is drop frame.

So it seems to me that a simple batch capture will not work and that the only way to make it work is to manually check each and every cut.

Any and all input will be much appreciated.

Can you recommend any reputable Final Cut online facilities?

Thanks a lot,

Gabe

Capture the footage with a Kona 3. It'll upconvert SD to HD pillar-boxing the footage like you want. No problem. And it does a great job too.

Call Nate @ The DR Group 800-323-4647. He is the sales guy, but TJ is the actual post guy who knows what's what.

Another good option is Plastercity Post - 323-469-3191. Michael Cioni is the guy there.

DR Group is cheaper...but still excellent quality. I just finished onlining my second show there.

In the Burbank area, I'd recommend "Alpha Dogs". www.4alphadogs.com

(818) 729-9262

Terry Curren is the owner and can certainly help you figure out the best workflow.

Good Luck.

Some might recommend ProRes 422 HQ as a mastering solution, but you have to upgrade to FCS2. Definitely get advice on that.
