Actually, it's not a problem. Higher versions can always open project files from lower versions.
However, you must backup your project file first, using your own computer. If you're using the project file, make a copy for your friend to open and watch. Once a project file is opened by a higher version and saved, you can't go back. At least not easily. So once your friend opens your project file, you won't be able to use it anymore.
Personally, if you're going to keep editing on your FCP4.5 system and your friend is just watching, I'd say you should just export a movie file. No need to muck with your project file or media -- in fact, no need to move your drive all over the place.
