Dissolve between a million stills

I'm going to import a Very Large Number of stills. There's nothing magic or odd about them. They all match in size and colorspace, etc, but the content is very slightly different one to the next.

The desire is to dissolve between them. Say four or five frame dissolve from one to the next, but the actual numbers aren't important. I assume that once I(you) figure out the technique, the number will be a settable variable.

The possibility is that I'm going to need some kind of animation program to do this, but there's always a possibility there's a way to pull this off in FCP.

First create the "template" transition you want in the timeline. Once its settings are perfect, drag it into the Browser, then CONTROL-click on it and choose "Default Transition". Now drag the stills into the Canvas and drop them into "Overwrite with Transition".
