avi files play perfect in imovie but are jittery in FCP5

I posted this before but it went unanswered.
my media is .avi files 1280X720

The files play perfect and smooth in imovie.
I started a new project in FCP5 and preset the frame size, editing timebase, etc.

When I play the clips in the viewer they are smooth and perfect. But when I drop and render them in the timeline the pans stutter slightly.

I exported a raw clip to a movie from FCP and in the .mov file they also stutter slightly.

Anyone know how to fix this?

What happens if you open the movie up in QuickTime Player?

The raw .avi file always opens from quicktime according to (File Info)

I tried 29.97 and 30 in compressor and several other variations, always keeping the same frame size, but it still always jitters in the pans.

In a side by side comparison with the .avi or all alone, the compressor files I create never pan smooth.

I seem to only get glass smooth pans from the .avi (opened from quicktime)
Or when I play it in imovie.
Of course my goal is to edit it in FCP.
