Audio rendering

I'm sure this is out of the FCP 101 class, but how can I stop my audio needing to render everytime I move or cut any audio clip on my timeline (as in, edit)? I don't remember that this use to happen. Is there a preference that needs to be changed? Does it have anything to do with the original file type of the audio?

Cheers!

can do.
what type is the audio?

FCP likes: AIFF, WAV, SDII
doesnt like: MP3, AAC.

uncompressed audio good
compressed audio bad.

also, clips that are DVStream need their audio rendered in FCP.
that includes clips in iMovie, or clips exported from say, MPeg Streamclip as DVStream.
my experience, with that is that once it's rendered, it stays rendered.
so let's say it's compressed audio.

you;re best off converting any compressed audio to an FCP freindly format such as AIFF.
you can do that in Quicktime (one file at a time)
or iTunes (in batches, and have the converts go to your Music Library)
or Compressor. (batches, and files by default wind up alongside the originals)

here's an article on using compressor (v2) for this:

As Nick said for compressed audio you're best off converting it. For other audio you can select it and use Sequence>Render Only>Item Level. That should keep it from having to be rendered if you change it.

Yes guilty - MP3 audio. So, from now on I'll just convert any compressed audio before importing. Thanks.

Compressed audio is apparently my problem. But, what is this Sequence>Render Only>Item Level selection? Never pay any attention to those items.
