FCP4 Overwrite Media Msg? & auto handles?
October 03, 2007 10:24AM
Hello again,

Okay so I have sound as I log and scroll.
And I logged all day yesterday and this
morning, after I put each file into a properly titled Bin
... I am now getting a pop up screen after I click
OKAY on the capture.

It says:

Overwrite Media
"A file with the specific name has been found
to --something--- on your capture scratch.
Enter a different file name and click

Abort or
Overwrite"

But the name in the type-in space is the same
name that it was logged with... so I leave it there
and click overwrite.

But why is this happening?
How do I stop it?

NEXT question:

Is there a way I can set a preference to make 5 second handles
on all my log/captures? So that I do not have to type that 5;00 in
when I go to batch capture each time?

Thank you SOOO much!

Judy

First check your Scratch Disk location and see if a file in there has the same name as the clip you're about to capture.

If not, then you've come across one of the most annoying bugs I've seen in FCP. It can be the result of a failed capture. It's a form of corruption where FCP thinks you have a clip with an identical name as a clip about to be captured, but that clip doesn't exist. One potential solution is to take the logging information of the to-be-captured clip and relog it fresh -- do so by dragging that logged entry into the Log and Capture window, copy the Log Notes over if necessary, and hit F2 to relog it as a fresh clip.

In my opinion, it's not a great thing to add across-the-board handles to your captures. When trimming the clips (Media Manager) handles can be useful, but for captures, you could end up in untimecoded tape or go across timecode breaks if you use the capture-with-handles option, especially if you're adding huge five-second handles. It's better to simply log with some wiggle room. That way, you know exactly where your handles are, how much for each clip, and there's less waste.
