Not really a FCP problem, a Dock concern

For whatever reason when I put my arrow over apps in the dock, it no longer says what the app is anymore. Not that I really need to see the text but thought this was unusual. Went to the dock preferences but see nothing pertinent there. Any explanation? I'm on OS 10.4.1 on a Mac Pro
