Is there any consensus on which format is better or easier to work with. I'm in the market for a consumer or prosumer level camera but the avchd compatability issue has me gun shy. Would an avchd camera mean I have to buy an intel based mac? Or upgrade from fcp 5 to 6?

Have you considered DVCPro HD? You could use the Panasonic HVX-200 camera. Looks great and no "Long GOP" issues and DVCPro HD is supported by FCP 5.

There really are more types of HD than you can shake a stick at. I'm hoping to find a camera smaller than the HVX-200 (and less expensive). I looked at a Canon HG10 the other day...very tiny and a great picture...but I'm wary of the AVCHD complications.

You need an Intel Mac and FCP 6.0.1 to do AVCHD and even then it has to be transcoded to the AIC codec. So HDV is your best bet if you want a cheap camera.
