Compressor Workflow

I just got thetutorial 'The Art of Encoding Using Compressor'. A workflow suggestion was made to export your timeline, unrendered, to compressor and let it handle the job of rendering to get the highest quality Mpeg-2. Does this mean disconnecting or trashing render files before outputing or just not doing a final render? It seems you have to render while your editing in order to view the effects and footage in real time.

I am working in an HDV timeline, one hour project, and want to know if this is the best workflow for me.
