Strange black screen

Strange black screen

Most puzzled about this one.

Yesterday I installed various bits and pieces:

ProApps 2007 update 2.
Final Cut update 6.0.2.
DVD Studio Pro update 4.2.1.
Motion update 3.0.2.

All seemed well. So I did my usual Thursday backup.

But today I ran FCP and got a totally black screen (apart from the menu bar).

If I click on the little apple and select Recent Items>(something else), I see the Final Cut windows as normal (with 'something else' foreground). When I click on a FCP window, the screen goes black again.

If I'd not done a backup straight after the install, I'd be okay...

Has anybody else come across this strangeness? Remedy?

I'd scrap FCP and re-install, but my system began as 1.25, and went through all the numbers; I fear having to find all the serials and things...

Many thanks for any hints, tips, used banknotes, etc.

Ol.

Machine is a 2.7 dual G5 with 4Megs of RAM. OS 10.4.11.

trash your preferences?
but you should be starting with a fresh set after an install, so that probably wont help.

how are other apps behaving?

FWIW, you don't have to go thru every version.
install the 1st one (1.25),
then jump to (6.0)
then update to 6.02

Good Sir,

I thank you for that. Especially the reminder about 1.25 straight to 6.

Forgot to mention I'd tried the prefs.

Other things, including DVD Studio Pro and Motion, seem to be fine.

I'll just have to grit my teeth and do a re-install.

Cheers,

Ol.

Just in case anybody else has this problem, here's how I managed to get it to go away (I'd like to say I cured it, but who can tell?):

I scrapped any and everything I could find to do with FCP, re-installed it (along with the rest of the package), then re-started.

Same black screen problem.

Did exactly the same thing a second time. Cleared.

Sadly I've no idea why.

And I didn't need to give it serial numbers. Again I don't know why, though I suspect it might be something to do with DVDSP, etc, being there.

Many thanks again to Nick,

Ol.
