i'm kinda new to macs... is there a way of preventing my hard disks from shutting down after being idle for a couple of minutes? final cut is crashing every single time one of the disks which contain the current working project has to come back from hibernation...

thx

It's in system preferences under "energy saver"

Yes, sleeping hard disks is a killer for FCP. Not only can it take your media offline, but it can also cause file and preference corruptions. And I'm fairly certain that some drives would do that whether your preference is on or not. I worked with a Western Digital "MyBook" 300GB drive that gave me a Spinning Beach Ball of Death every five minutes or so, and all my Energy Saver settings were set to "Never".

yeah, ive found that some of the more "consumer-ish" brands seem to have hardwired sleep behaviors

Try No Spin. It's shareware that will ping designated drives at specified intervals to keep them from dosing off.
