23.98 output to 59.94
January 28, 2008 09:46AM
Hi everyone, this is my first post.

I'm editing a pilot that was shot 720/23.98 and the final output is to be 720/59.94. I've put the footage in a 59.94 timeline, but it looks a little jumpy. I'm assuming FCP is adding frames, but not in the best way. Also, I will be adding in archival SD footage that will be given to me at 29.97, so it seems like the 59.94 timeline is where I need to be for my workflow. Any suggestions?

I'm running a MacPro 2.66 with FCS 2 and a blackmagic HD extreme card.

NO need to put it into a 59.94 timeline. The BMD card will add the proper pulldown when you output. FCP doesn't do it right...the card does.

cool, but what about the 29.97 footage I will be adding? If I put that in my 23.98 timeline it will take out frames. Will black magic add frames back in properly when laying to tape?

Gah...you aren't making this easy are you?

So 23.98 footage, with 29.978 footage CONVERTED to 23.98 that you need to convert AGAIN to 59.94. Sheesh. Well, I haven't done that before, so I don't know. 23.98 to 59.94 I have done. 29.97 to 59.94 converts beautifully. But 29.97 to 23.98 up to 59.94...The only thing I can suggest is to do a test output and see. That is how I figured out 23.98 to 59.94 would work.

GOOD QUESTION! and Idea
January 28, 2008 07:27PM
This is a good question! I am in documentary and editing both a 720p piece for one client and a 1080p for another. Both are 23.98. Both need to add 29.97 archive.

In fact, I predict that almost ALL docs I ever work in the future, for the rest of my life, will need to add standard def 29.97 archive. Its just too ubiquitous.

Of course these clips are stuttering for me in my 23.98 Sequence. I expected that.

I am beginning to think that this is a job for Compressor. Uprez and frame-rate change at the same time. But I bet some specific settings in the frame rate conversion section will have to be made. And all of of it done during the Online.

What if we started a database here at LAFCPUG for Compressor settings? On its own page, or as a sticky. Especially for converting archive for us 23.98 doc makers. Maybe even a section on h.624 web settings, or PAL/NTSC conversions too, while we are at it. The users could submit them and then the rest of us could rate them -- thumbs up or thumbs down. The best would rise to the top. This would certainly bring more traffic to the site as a bonus.

Compressor is one way...one that I have used with much success. A Terranex converter at a post house is another way....I have used that as well...on the same project. But we had DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 footage and betasp, DV, VHS at 29.97 fps and PAL VHS at 29.97fps that we incorporated. ALL were converted to 23.98 via Compressor and Terranex. But our deliverable was 1080p 23.98...so that all matched up fine. YOu are going from 29.97 to 23.98 to 59.94...that is a LOT OF HEADACHE for me to even grasp! Test it...see how it works. We did a lot of testing to make sure our outputs worked.

OH, and I do have a tutorial for uprezzing DV to DVCPRO HD...that's a start...

Thats a great tutorial.

I'm imagining some kind of sequel to that. A sort of Wikipedia or Digg or Urban Dictionary style database of "coolest format conversions in Compressor" that everyone could submit to and everyone could judge as peers. The most liked go to the top of the list, ect. thumbs upthumbs down

Radical democracy for Compressor. smiling smiley

I'm sure when I've tried adding 24p footage to a 60p timeline, FCP added frames in a 3:2 pattern, which is about as near to as correct as possible because 60p doesn't have a standard pulldown from 24p as it's progressive not interlaced. AFAIK, capture cards have an add pulldown for 24p to 60i, but I have no idea what they do for 24p to 60p.

Hi Graeme!

What about that pesky 29.97 archive in our 23.98 Sequences? Any of your tools help? Compared to Compressor?

Thanks,

-Christopher
