simple workflow needed

Apologies for the very rudimentary question, but... I'm stuck.

30 minutes of source video shot on a Sony prosumer HD camera at 1080i. However it's in a proprietary format that is apparently 1440x810. Video was exported as mpg files which QT Player says are MPEG2 Muxed, 1440x810 pixels, 29.97 fps.

I need to bring these clips into FCP to edit. Every sequence preset I try, when I drop video onto the timeline it requires a render before playing it back.

Is there a preset I should use that will prevent this? Or a preset to start with and then tweak some settings?

Or should I convert the source video to some other format prior to bringing it into FCP? If so, what?

Using FCP 5.1.4 on OS X 10.5.

If it's muxed, you're probably missing audio, as well. Run MPEG Streamclip on it to demux and convert to an editing-friendly format.
