Voice Over tool is greyed out.

I'm using a power mac g5 with os 10.4.11, FCP 6.0.2
I've been using the Voice Over tool with ease and all of a sudden the record button is greyed out.

Those things are finicky. Is there video in the timeline? Did you set an in-point?

An In point is not necessary, but you need to have the Source/Target buttons activated for audio. Check that.

actually an In point is necessary (also an Out point) if you have no media already in the timeline at and beyond the playhead

... the VO Tool needs a recording range for you to track to. normally it would take the playhead position in the timeline as the in point and then track to the clips in the timeline from that point forward, but if there is no media in the timeline at and beyond the playhead then you need to define the range with both an In and Out point .. the total recording range defined in this fashion must be less than 5 minutes

If it's a blank timeline, I'd just use a Slug or Color Matte to fill in the video track.
