USB connection is slow

HI, there.

ive got a bunch of Premier media on a Western Digital MyBook drive that is Windows NT formatted and USB only.

im trying to copy it all across to a Mac Formated FW drive,
but a simple 3 G transfer is taking 15 minutes
(there is 300G on this drive, and 50G on another)

i would have thought the USB drive was USB2, but this seems like a USB1 speed.

is there any way i can verify what the USB connection really is?
and is there some trick to getting it to behave?

thanks,
nick

Is it even going to work? I thought there was a 2GB limit on FAT drives and that NTFS formatted drives are read only when connected to Macs.

Also, USB2 os backwards compatible, but it will slow down to the speed of the slowest thing in the chain, so if there is a USB 1 point in there, you'll get USB 1 speeds.

that's it!
like firewire..

teh hub in my cinema display was a slow device.
unplugging that i now get an acceptable transfer rate.

i want to transfer everything to a MAC formatted drive,
and hopefully open the project in Premier on a Mac.
we'll see what happens.
the media was all captured as AVIs, and when i bring one into FCP it plays ok, but has a zero TC.

maybe it's a lost cause?

My limited experience with AVI is that it doesn't carry timecode. Do you have a time list or an EDL? That may be an interesting job.

The only way I can think of to do this is if each clip was exported twice, each clip clean and with burned time. That's horribly manual, but that would work.

i was talking to Premeier user last night,
and apparently if i open the prem project on a mac
the AVI captures will work.

similarly, if i capture into Prem on a mac as QuickTimes, they will work on a PC Premier.
an FCP captured quicktime WONT work on a PC Premeire, though.

maybe the TC track is there on the AVI's but just in a spot where QUickTime doesn't read it?
or maybe Premier is doing all the Magic?
