Run 5.1.4 & 6 on the Same machine?
April 02, 2008 07:35PM
I know I can use XML, but I would rather run both 5.1.4 & 6 on the same machine.
Is this possible...advisable?

Using:

G5 Quadcore
OS 10.5
Kona LE Capture
Ciprico Huge Fibre Optic drives

Internal Drive is partitioned at the moment.

Thanks,
Paul Buhl

Different partitions, yes. But not the same drive with the same OS. I used to be able to have FCP 4.5, 5.0.4 and 5.1.4 on the same OS drive...but something changed with FCP 6.0 that doesn't allow that.

Thanks Shane,

so that means I need a separate OS 10.5 install on the partition as well?

Or Tiger...whatever. But yes, either separate drive with separate OS, or a drive partitioned into TWO with two different OS installs.

i've got 5.01 and 6.02 going at once on the same machine,
so i dont know what happend on your system, Shane.

i've been bouncing between a new project (6.02) and an old one (5.14) for a while now.

Well, it just didn't Nick. FCP 5.1.4 would just start to load then crash. FCP 6 worked fine.

Glad it works for you. But I have separate drives for this. And Avid MC is on the FCP 5.1.4 one as well. Not that I use it...kinda strive to avoid using it.

Should be as simple as dragging 5.1.4 out of the applications folder or renaming the app Final Cut Pro 5 or something.

I had 5.1.1 and 6.0.2 installed and running in the same machine (G5) for quite a while, because for some reason, another editor was working off 2 workstations and had ongoing projects and didn't run updates. But i also copied package contents and kept them on the desktop...

Thanks Shane,

I think what a lot of people miss is the fact that it's not always a matter of "whatever seems to
work" with all kinds of undesirable work-arounds. Sometimes people are looking for advise on the
best option, one that is most likely to avoid conflicts and work "optimally", as the one you suggested.

So thanks again,
Paul.

well, what i'm missing is the "undesirable work-around" of constantly re-booting.

works for me.
