Do you have a Tivo or one of the cable-company knock-offs? This advice is for the Tivo, so YMMV.
1. Plug a camera or deck into your Tivos output and record the show to tape, or use pass-through to record directly to FCP (use 'Non-controllable device' and 'Capture Now'). You have to record it in real-time of course.
2. If your Tivo is networked to your system then you can download the show directly and convert it. There's a free app called
Tivo decode manager that will download the show as an MPEG-2 file, which it will convert to an MPEG-4. Which, does you no good in FCP.
You may want to buy a copy of Toast, which at least has a Tivo-like interface for connecting with the DVR and downloading the shows to your computer. It can convert the shows into an editable format but *only* if you perform a little ninja action in the Terminal to enable full-size output. (That's how Toast 8 works, can't vouch for v9. You can find the Terminal hack if you Google it... but I didn't tell you that
)
