File is not a movie -- ways to restore?

I am working on a ProRes 422 project in FCP 6.0.4 on an intel G5. The edit was going along fine until we started having (LACIE) drive problems and transferred all media to a new drive (at first we thought it was just a drive directory issue). As it turns out some clips were not good even before we transferred. In the FCP viewer, these clips show up as a white screen and will not play at all. When the QT files are opened from the drive, we get the error message -- 'The Movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file.'

Unfortunately, a mistake was made and these files were erased from the memory cards before being backed up to a second drive.

We have tried VLC and MPEG Streamclip to open these files, but no luck.

Does anyone have suggestions about these problem files?
thanks for any ideas!

I think there needs to be more information.
1) You say ProRes project but what type of files were captured in ProRes and with what camera?
2) intel G5? Do you mean a Mac Pro? And if so, what are the specs of that machine?
3) What type, size and speed of external drive are you using? Also, how is this connected to your Mac? firewire400?
4) Where you ever able to view all of the clips?
5) What version of QT Pro are you using?
6) Do you get audio with the clips or nothing at all?
