Capture footage in Final Cut to be used in an Avid?

Rather than tie up our precious editing bays to capture footage into the Avid systems, I wanted to get a cheap Final Cut system that can capture all the tapes that come in. Can Final Cut easily digitize the footage into something Avid could use?

"Precious"? You mean expensive to maintain, right? winking smiley

If you are cutting on an Avid, go straight into the Avid. The Avid will have to import & convert all that footage from FCP to MXF files anyway so you are doubling the amount of space being used on your drives. As a matter of fact, I use my Avid bay for digitizing & laying off. I use FCP / After Effects / etc on my laptop for everything else.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

Get a cheap Avid system. Avid is cheap now.

NEVER capture footage from one NLE for use in another. FCP and Avid capture footage in VASTLY different ways. Quicktime for FCP, OMFI or MXF for Avid. YOu will save zero time capturing on FCP for Avid, and you will lose quality and increase import time as Avid has to convert the footage.
