Log & Capture from Mixed Tapes

Log & Capture from Mixed Tapes
January 05, 2009 09:08PM
We're having an intermittent problem logging some of our tapes from a recent project.

The tapes shot with our Sony HD and SD cameras apparently work just fine, but tapes from two other DV cameras just won't work to import.....

The tapes will play normally in both our HD and SD cameras (on the camera preview window), and our DV editing deck, but when we try to log the video, FCP gives an error indicating that the presets are incorrect, and suggests that the error may occur when playing a DV tape in an HDV device.

This is critical that we get these tapes logged A.S.A.P.

Thank you for any assistance.....

To try to further elucidate the problem above, I am also putting in more information for my team:

we have a set of tapes that were recorded in HD on another camera;
the tapes play in our HD and our DV cameras;
however, when we attempt to log and capture in FCP we receive a
message that the pre-sets are not set correctly.

The message indicates that this can occur when playing a DV tape in
an HDV Device.

as per feed back received from FCPUG we have gone to
View and refresh AV devices... we have changed the firewire cable,
we have restarted the computer... done different things like play the
tape in VCR and while playing tried to Log & Capture...

but it will not read... odd thing is it is reading it enough to correctly
set the 'logging bin and the reel number" but will not capture the tape.

Anyone with help out there? and boy do we need it... DEADLINES!?!?

Thank you for your help.

Is the flavor of HD in fact HDV? Try matching the actual tape format to a capture preset. Use Easy Presets to start.

Some decks like Sony's HVR-M25U will allow you to log and capture to timecode. Others won't. The usual way to capture HDV is via Capture Now, naming the single file and letting the system parse it into separate master clips based on camera start-stop detection.

But also check where you're capturing TO-- it could be aborting because the destination hasn't got room. You need to explicitly set the destination to your chosen scratch disks.

All I can think of at the moment.

Yes, I meant HDV. The only tapes that gave us problems were the DV tapes from the OTHER DV cameras. Out HDV tapes, and our DV tapes (we have one Sony DV and one Sony HDV camera) were logged/captured normally.

How can we find out exactly what the correct preset should be? Are their DV tapes and our DV tapes in a different format, and can we find out exactly what that format is in order to configure FCP to receive it?
