Saving keyframes changes to a video filter while in the Viewer??

I'm sure that there is a very simple answer to this question, but I can't figure it out, and I'm getting frustrated trying to find the answer in the Manual.

I'm using a video (spotlight) filter. I'm adding the filter to the clip and then double-clicking it in the Timeline to get it to appear in the Viewer. I make the necessary changes (key-framing the size, etc. as the video progresses along, and then I press Option + R to render, but it's not making the changes that I've made in the Viewer.

What have I forgotten to do?

When you play it back in the viewer before you try playing it back in the timeline, does it do what you want?
Are you clicking the little diamond button to create a keyframe?

Sorry. I'm still not quite sure what I did, but I solved the issue.
