trying to beat the hdv render times

g5 dual 2.7 osx 10.5.6 fcp 6.05 no capture card

i have an ongoing project for the web shot in hdv, that includes green screen stuff and some graphics. the first incarnation was a nightmare with render times. i pulled the key in motion and rendering the clips took forever. should i capture to prores, edit in prores? would that help with render times? how would i set that up? what are the advantages disadvantages? i usually do a capture now.
