mp4 file from JVC HM700

A friend stopped by with some footage from his JVC HM700. it was in MP4 file format. We were unable to open them in FCP 6.0.5
why is that? we only copied the mp4 files. were we supposed to also copy over the other smaller files. fyi it was shot as 720p @30

The camera shoots in two formats, one native QuickTime and directly editable in FCP, and an MPEG-4 format. You might try using log and transfer with this, but you will need the whole folder structure to access the media.

What Tom said. Otherwise, you're off to Compressor or Episode Pro for a transcode and a likely noticeable quality hit.
