Downsizing!

Guys.

Got a question:
-I've got a 26 minute doco sitting on my raid taking up lots of space.
I dont want to remove the whole thing cause there may be small changes for some networks.
Is there a way (Like After Effects) where you somehow save just the files that are being used in the timeline(s) and the rest is dropped/deleted?

AND/OR
Is there a way to do this while automatically creating new independant subclips from the fotage in the timeline and the master files are dleted?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks.

Media Manager.

Better make sure they really don't want footage you're not currently using, though.

Personally, I'd discourage using Media Manager for trimming unless the project is complete.

Hey.

Thanks I'll give that a go.
Im not worried about loosing anything really as I'm backing up onto backuptapes so thats fine. (They just take so damn long to rebuild)

"Is there a way (Like After Effects) where you somehow save just the files that are being used in the timeline(s) and the rest is dropped/deleted?"

if it's the FILES you want to keep, then there are 2 ways:

METHOD 1
select the sequence in the browser,
Apple F to open the search tool,
search for UNUSED media in the selected sequence.
you'll get a list of all the clips that arent being used.
select all in the list,
and Shift D to open the "Make Offline" window
send them to the trash
check your timeline to see if nothing untoward happened, and nothing has gone offline.
when that checks out, empty the trash.

METHOD 2
select the sequence,
open Media Manager.
use MOVE mode
DONT delete unused
browse to a location on your existing capture drive (only works if you've only got the one drive)
then find your remaining captures manually, and delete them.

this idea only just occurred to me, so it may not be very "mature"
for now i think i prefer method 1

both these techniques work if you've exercised "tight" logging, and the master files are not very big.
if you captured huge chunks, then it's Media Manager for you smiling smiley

"AND/OR

uh i think this means it's a case for Media Manager.

I like Nick's method 1 except that you should include *all* active sequences requiring media if there's more than one in your project-- to list all truly unused media!
